Largest Rectangle in Histogram

advancedlayer A8 · Monotonic stack & queue5 tests

heights describes a histogram of bars, each exactly one unit wide. Return the area of the largest axis-aligned rectangle you can fit inside it.

  • A rectangle of height h may span a run of consecutive bars as long as every bar in the run is at least h tall
  • An empty histogram has area 0
  • Aim for O(n); the obvious 'expand from each bar' solution is O(n^2)
